Over the years, I have been drawn to odd and different TV shows.  I am not sure why, but I seem to love the ones that are a little unusual for one reason or another.  The Brits have been the best in creating interesting and fresh shows.  That is why the following best 3 list was generated.

So, here is the Best 3…odd but excellent British TV Shows.

 1. Misfits

2. Primeval

3. Being Human

The Misfits is a show with a great premise.  Five young people are caught in an electrical storm while doing community service.  As a result of the electrical storm, they discover that they have supernatural “powers” and the story centers around their coming to terms with their powers (and the killing of their probation worker who went crazy).  It is now going into its 4th season and is just a brilliant show.

Spoiler Alert***  Now, some say that the shows dynamic changed with the loss of the character, Nathan (Robert Sheehan) but I think the series was able to keep its momentum in the 3rd season with the introduction of a new character Rudy (Joseph Gilgun).  Most reviews I have read liken this show to the “Heroes” series, but I think that Misfits is far better [remember Heroes had a bigger budget for special effects].  It has great humour, as only the Brits can do and is just a really interesting show.  I have heard rumors that an American version is being created, but I just don’t think it will be able to capture the humour that the Brit version exudes.

Primeval is another show with a great premise.  Supernatural portholes in time start appearing in theLondon area, and a group of scientists have to locate the portholes and any prehistoric creatures that might come out from these portholes.  I believe that this show is in its 4th or 5th season.  Again, just a very entertaining show, with interesting characters and a dynamic that works.

As for #3, Being Human is a great show.  The concept is that a vampire, werewolf and ghost try to live together and get along.  Now, there has already been an American version of this series, which in its defense is not all that bad, but the Brit version of the series is so much better.  Being Human is going into its 5th season (I believe it is in its second season in the U.S.).

These three series are highly worth checking out if you can.

For this post, I have to admit the subject was not my idea but from my sister and I just thought it was genius (thanks Sister!)

We all have television shows that we get hooked on.  Television shows that make us laugh, cry, or get angry.  We look forward to seeing them, never missing an episode (sometimes that even includes re-arranging our life or putting things on hold such as the dishes or laundry) and then the “big wigs” in charge of the television networks decide to CANCEL those shows.

So, as my sister pointed out, I should pay tribute to the Best 3…TV Shows that were Cancelled.

1.  Chuck

2. Veronica Mars

3.  My So-Called Life

My number one choice was easy.  Chuck was the best show that was on tv for the last five years.  It never got the credit that it deserved.  Thanks to all the great fans the show had, they were able to mount a campaign (with the help of Subway) to bring it back when the threat of cancellation loomed from NBC.   At first, I knew nothing about the show when it first came out.  I had a colleague tell me about it.  She lent me her Season 1 DVD and after watching the first episode, that was all I needed, I was hooked.  I fell in love with Chuck (Zachary Levi) – he was your average guy (and the cutest nerd that I had ever seen).  Together with Super Spy Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski), his best friend Morgan (Joshua Gomez) and other Super Spy Casey (Adam Baldwin) they made a great team.  There is so much good things to say about this show and now it has been Cancelled and I won’t get to enjoy the adventures of Team Bartowski.

Also, I should mention that I have the biggest crush on Zachary Levi!  He has an awesome company The Nerd Machine – http://www.thenerdmachine.com/

For my second choice,  it had to be Veronica Mars.  This was a show that was cancelled too fast.  Three seasons was not enough.  It was a show that was different, that had great characters and had great episodes.  It created one great TV couple in Veronica and Logan.  I still miss it.  Kristen Bell was great as Veronica.  Unfortunately the ratings were low and that means CANCELLATION.

As for my third choice, that was easy.  It had to be My So-Called Life.  This show unfortunately only got one season.  It was a show that so many people could relate to.  Angela was a character that a specific average girl could relate too.  I really wish this one could have lasted a little longer.  It would have been nice to see how Angela’s life would have progress.  Oh well!

This was a hard category but one that I really wanted to write about. It will definitely not please everyone but that is something that can be expected, especially with this blog.  So, here is my choice for Best 3…Novels of All Time (Fiction) :

1. Animal Farm by George Orwell

2. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

3.  Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

Honorable mentions go out to the following books:  1984 by George Orwell; Lord of the Flies by William Golding; Pride and Prejuidice by Jane Austen; On the Road by Jack Kerouac; The Call of the Wild by Jack London; Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury; and The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy.

Animal farm is an allegorical novel that presents the consequences of corruption, indifference, ignorance and greed can have on a society (or farm in this case).  George Orwell does an amazing job of protraying the change in the pigs as they lead the revolation and eventually as they as corrupted by absolute power.  This absolute power is best displayed when the original commandments (listed below) are changed to reflect the corruptions i.e. No animal shall kill any other animal without cause.

The original commandments :

  1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
  2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
  3. No animal shall wear clothes.
  4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
  5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
  6. No animal shall kill any other animal.
  7. All animals are equal.

This novel is timeless and truly can be applied to any age in history (as history has shown us time and time again, how power can corrupt).

For my second choice, I chose Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, which to me is one great book.  I love Captain Yossarian.  There is something in his character and the whole theme of the book that makes this a great read and a great novel.  It has coined the phrase “Catch 22” that we use in our everyday lives.  It presents themes on heroism, sanity and insanity, the power and ineffectiveness of bureaucracy, etc.

For my last best pick (which was hard because I have some great novels mentioned in the honrables mentions list) but for me it had to be Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.  It is another great novel that highlights themes such as fate, struggle of human beings, time travel etc.  The characters created by Vonnegut and the situations in which they find themselves (other than the time travel) seem so real (which is a credit to his writing) and make you really think when you read this novel.

With this blog, I promised the Best 3 of Everything out there in the world.  I am bouncing from one topic to the next with no consistency and that is just what I intended.  My posts are things that might strike me at one moment in the day and I just run with it.  After my last post of Best 3 days of the week, I thought about what I do on some of those days and that included watching TV.

So, here are the Best 3…TV Shows (on television right now):

1.  The Vampire Diaries

2.  Sons of Anarchy

3. Community

There are some honorable mentions: The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Amazing Race, The Voice, The River (which I do like because its different) and NCIS: LA.

Let’s talk about #1 best pick – The Vampire Diaries.  There is so much to say about this show.  It is great – that is the first thing.  It is filled with amazing characters (and great actors such as Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Joseph Morgan and the rest of the cast).  The episodes are great.  This show has a great way of not leaving you guessing which just annoys me in shows that seem to drag you along.

For those that are going to hate me for saying this – I am rooting for Elena and Stefan.  They belong together.  I’ve loved them together since Day 1.   It broke my heart when Stefan became the Ripper – so sad but I like how the last few episodes ***spoiler alert*** explains that he is off human blood!  Yeah!!!   Damon is so good looking but not right for Elena.  I’m also loving the Caroline/Klaus storyline – I hope this is explored – maybe Caroline can love him like he needs to be loved – that is my hope.   There is so much more to say but I will leave it there for now.

Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club

As for my second best, I love Sons of Anarchy.  What a great and original show.  Its nice to see a show that isn’t focused on lawyers, doctors or cops.  It has superb acting from Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Ron Perlman and the rest of the cast.  The episodes are full of everything from romance, to violence to drama to comedy.  It hooked me in from its very first episode.  I was so glad to hear that it is getting another season.  Yeah!!! SAMCRO

As for my last pick, Community is one of those shows (such as Chuck – which I loved – R.I.P. Chuck) that is really funny yet cannot seem to gather the audience.  It is clever, hilarious and like no other show on the tube.  Please, let’s hope NBC gets smart and doesn’t get rid of it.

If you are reading this and have never seen the shows I mention, I encourage you to check them out.

Best 3…Days of the Week

Sunday Morning

Sunday Morning (Photo credit: jspaw)

This doesn’t seem like a topic that should go next but let’s face it, the days of the week play an important part in our lives and I think they deserve a best 3.  So here are the Best 3….Days of the Week:

1. Sunday

2. Friday

3. Tuesday

Why would I put Sunday as the best?  That is an easy one.  For me Sunday really is a day of rest.

It is right after Saturday which means that if you you’ve taken good advantage of the weekend and have had lots of fun on Saturday, Sunday becomes the time to just relax and be lazy.  It is the day where you should have a big brunch, stay in your comfy cloths, read, lounge on the couch, catch up on movies, or anything else that tickled your fancy.  It is such an important day because you know that the next day means starting your work week, and all the craziness that goes after.

As for my secon choice, Friday just seemed right.  It is the day that you looke forward to all week!  It is what you are working for…and when it comes, it is just such a great day.

Tuesday as my third best might seem funny to some people but for me, it represents the day after Monday (and Monday is the worst day of the week).  It is really the beginning of the week for me.

BEST 3…80s movies

The first Best 3 of Everything had to be the best 80s movies. Why you ask would I chose that as my first best 3? Well it all revolves around the fact that I was one of the millions of people out there that was unfortunate enough to catch a cold. I was feeling miserable and spent the day curled up on my sofa with Netflix. So here is the list…

1. Sixteen Candles

2. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

3. The Goonies

In this case, there are alot of honorable mentions such as Dirty Dancing, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Top Gun.

Sixteen Candles is my number one choice.  It has everything – romance, comedy, drama.  It’s a movie that you can never get tired of watching and let’s face it, Jake Ryan is still hot (even in 2012) and he picked her!    There is so much good that I can say about it but I won’t bore you.

As for my other two choices, they are the movies that I remember most.  They are filled with great characters, scenes and just what I think a best 3 movie should be made of.

Hello and welcome to my blog.  My Best 3 of Everything blog was started to share what I personally believe to be the best three things of everything out there in the world.  There will be no limits to what I rank.  The possibilities are endless.  Everything from best three cereals to best three books to read on a beach.  There won’t be anything out there that will remain unranked.   My best three of everything list will always be the first thing you read but I will also explain why I chose those 3 particular items, people, places, things, etc as the best.  There may also be times when I will hand out some close runner-ups or honorable mentions.

These list are meant to be fun (with no harm intended) yet I know that there is the possibility for debate on my choices and that is indeed welcomed.  I want to hear what others might have chosen.

I hope you enjoy…
