I was in my office today, working through a variety of problems that needed solving, trying to respond to email after email and trying to get through some of my workload, when I suddenly pushed away from my computer, closed my eyes and leaned back in my chair.  I could feel that annoying stress headache coming on and I wanted to try and eleviate it.  When I opened my eyes a few seconds later, my eyes readjusted and focused on the inspirational quote that I had put on wall a few weeks ago.  To be honest, when I am busy, I am so focused I wouldn’t have been looking at anything else but my work.  However my little pause and the quote below put a lot of things in perspective for me.  I forgot that I owe it myself to make sure that I get my work done but that I also enjoy my work day.

Yes, as a society we spend more time then we should at work.  I did some research and found  a survey conducted by The Bureau of Labor (US Department of Labor) that found that Americans (with children) spend an average of 8.6 hours at work.  If you look closer, it shows that people are work more hours than they sleep.  Unfortunately, I could not find a survey for Americans (without children).

With this information, my topic for this post was easy.  If we spend so much time at work, I thought it would be nice to talk about the best 3 ways to enjoy your work day.

So, here are the Best 3…Ways to enjoy your work day:

1.  Take a break

2. Listen to music

3.  Laugh

My number 1 best pick shouldn’t surprise many people.  I am one of those people that rarely take a break and I think in the end that really effects me.  Today, after my moment of reflection, I grabbed my favorite co-worker and we went for a walk.  It was a 10 minute break but it got me out of the building, into the fresh air and sunshine and away from work.  Truly, this is something that helped refresh me and made me enjoy the work day so much more, especially when you have good company or even if you just walk and listen to music.  It breaks the day up.  It gives you a sense of renewal to get what needs to be done completed, plus if you keep it up, it gives you a great way to enjoy your work day because its something you look forward too!

For my # 2 best pick, it had to be listen to music.  Whether you are in an office or a cubicle, listening to music is a great way to enjoy your work day.  It has a way of blocking out the world around you and not only helps you work but makes you happy.  I can usually be seen with my earphones in, swaying my head back and forth listening to music.  I love to stream radio stations that I like or use Grooveshark – whichis the world’s largest on-demand music streaming and discovery service.  You can sign up and create your own playlist.  I also bring in my iPod and listen to that as well.   If it is a day when I really need to concentrate, I usually stream classical music and it is amazing how well I can focus and how much work gets done.   If you have never done this, I highly encourage you too.

Best pick #3 is something that may not always be possible but is essential for enjoying your work day.  However you can manage it, please find a way to laugh, it really will make those hours go faster.  For me, I have co-workers that help with this.  They know how to have fun and we do laugh a lot.

Over the years, I have been drawn to odd and different TV shows.  I am not sure why, but I seem to love the ones that are a little unusual for one reason or another.  The Brits have been the best in creating interesting and fresh shows.  That is why the following best 3 list was generated.

So, here is the Best 3…odd but excellent British TV Shows.

 1. Misfits

2. Primeval

3. Being Human

The Misfits is a show with a great premise.  Five young people are caught in an electrical storm while doing community service.  As a result of the electrical storm, they discover that they have supernatural “powers” and the story centers around their coming to terms with their powers (and the killing of their probation worker who went crazy).  It is now going into its 4th season and is just a brilliant show.

Spoiler Alert***  Now, some say that the shows dynamic changed with the loss of the character, Nathan (Robert Sheehan) but I think the series was able to keep its momentum in the 3rd season with the introduction of a new character Rudy (Joseph Gilgun).  Most reviews I have read liken this show to the “Heroes” series, but I think that Misfits is far better [remember Heroes had a bigger budget for special effects].  It has great humour, as only the Brits can do and is just a really interesting show.  I have heard rumors that an American version is being created, but I just don’t think it will be able to capture the humour that the Brit version exudes.

Primeval is another show with a great premise.  Supernatural portholes in time start appearing in theLondon area, and a group of scientists have to locate the portholes and any prehistoric creatures that might come out from these portholes.  I believe that this show is in its 4th or 5th season.  Again, just a very entertaining show, with interesting characters and a dynamic that works.

As for #3, Being Human is a great show.  The concept is that a vampire, werewolf and ghost try to live together and get along.  Now, there has already been an American version of this series, which in its defense is not all that bad, but the Brit version of the series is so much better.  Being Human is going into its 5th season (I believe it is in its second season in the U.S.).

These three series are highly worth checking out if you can.
